Saint Laurent Paris SS16 “Surf Sound” Studded Suede Western Jacket

From Hedi Slimane’s Spring/Summer 2016 “Surf Sound” collection for Saint Laurent Paris, a brown suede western jacket reflecting the designer’s fixation on California counterculture, vintage rock wardrobes, and heavily worn Americana.

Constructed in distressed brown suede, the jacket combines the proportions of a cropped trucker with western detailing throughout. Small metal studs trace the collar, lapels, chest seams, patch pockets, and angled hand pockets, emphasizing the architecture of the garment rather than functioning as standalone decoration.

The deliberately aged suede gives the surface substantial tonal variation, while a four-button front, pointed collar, chest patch pockets, angled welt pockets, adjustable cuffs, and black interior lining complete the construction. A particularly strong piece from the final period of Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent tenure.

the suede features an intentionally distressed and aged finish with tonal variation throughout as part of the original design.

“surf sound” is one of the collections that best explains hedi slimane's version of saint laurent. california surf culture, garage rock, vintage western clothing, and the wardrobes of musicians all get compressed into extremely refined luxury garments that are intentionally made to look like they've already lived a life.

this jacket is especially good because the decoration follows the construction. instead of covering the suede in studs, they're used almost like outlines — tracing the lapels, pockets, and seams and making the architecture of the jacket more visible.

the distressed brown suede does the rest. it has the character of something pulled from an old musician's wardrobe, but with the precision and finish of Hedi-era Saint Laurent. one of the stronger outerwear pieces from the final collection cycle before Slimane left the house in 2016.
