Craig Green Silk Quilted Bondage Jacket

Despite his relatively short career compared to his contemporaries, British menswear designer Craig Green has been pushing the boundaries of the current fashion zeitgeist since the inception of his eponymous label in 2012. In less than a decade, Green has acquired countless accolades and amassed a dedicated following of critics and consumers alike. Tthrough his unconventional yet grounded reinterpretation of the utilitarian uniform, Green’s garments have only grown more coveted with time. A crucial component of his appeal resides within his design philosophy which is summarized best in a statement made induring a 2018 interview with Document Journal where he remarked, “You can look at something that happened in the past, but you have to change the energy of it.” This deceptively simple ideology is reflected distinctly through his most recognizable piece: the quilted work jacket.

Debuting in his critically acclaimed Spring 2016 menswear show, the quilted work coat is Green’s abstract rendition of a blue-collar fashion staple. Referencing classic silhouettes from workwear brands such as Carhartt and Dickies, Green crafts an amalgamation of equal parts functional and alluring. The jacket follows the orthodox collared work jacket pattern. There are, however, several alterations that distinguish Green’s jacket from its predecessors. Like its namesake, instead of being comprised of a traditional heavy-duty cotton canvas or denim, the jacket is composed of a durable polyester, nylon, and/or cotton quilt, a signature motif of Green’s pieces. Instead of the standard button-up or zip-up front, the jacket employs a Cobrax snap-on closure. Moreover, a ribbon cinch lines the waist, allowing for a modular component that accommodates different body types. Green even goes on to reinterpret the silhouette and design of the jacket in subsequent seasons.

Green’s quilted work jacket is a testament to his design ethos. Drawing inspiration from a familiar silhouette produced and worn for more than a century, Green has truly re-engineered the standard work jacket into an outerwear piece in a league of its own.
