Blackmeans By: Yujiro Komatsu
Lighter Holder
Founded in 2008 by Yujiro Komatsu, blackmeans is a brand fully dedicated to the preservation of both Japanese heritage and punk culture. The root of its name, “burakumin” was derived from the moniker adopted by leather craftsmen from the Muromachi era of the 13th century, as divulged by Komatsu in an interview. Formerly an employee of Undercover, Komatsu’s similar vision and aesthetic is evident in blackmean’s extensive catalogue. They aim to exhibit true CRUSTCORE, a subgenre derivative of “crust punk”, a form of music created in early 80’s England. Their meticulous production of durable, long-lasting leather goods and clothing has reached an international audience as of late, establishing Japan as a serious contender in artisanal craftsmanship. From their infamous “Sid Vicious” leather jacket to embroidered cowhide coin pouches, the brand has been created to last as long as the products they construct.
